Abstract


Background: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a serious illness with significant costs to the society. Clinical decisions based on evidence-based guidelines improve the outcomeofmanagementinanapproachforappropriatetreatment and prompt referral for care. Evidence based medicine (EBM) describessuchanapproachincludingthebestevidenceinmaking decisions.
Aim: Observing cases managed on EBM and comparing the outcomes with cases managed without EBM in a community hospital, providing approach for the clinician in evaluating and treating patients.
Methodology:Anobservationalstudyon56patientsdividedinto 2 equal groups: 28 patient each: EBM group and NEBM group, observedduringaperiodfromJune2015to2016atAboElResh hospital, reviewing demographic, clinical data, observing their therapy andoutcomes.
Results: A high statistically significant difference for antimicrobial therapy between EBM group who were treated shortly and NEBM group who have delayed treatment for duration 6.8±2.1 days (P=0.001). Outcomes of NEBM group whoneededadmissiontoICUfor4.2±2.6dayswhilenopatients ofEBMgroupneedadmissionshowinghighstatisticaldifference (P=0.001).
