Seismicity and Local Magnitude Estimation in Central Egypt
Shaimaa Ali Mamoun Khater;
Abstract
In this study seismological data from the Egyptian National Seismic Network (ENSN) were used for the period from 1997 to 2018. About two thousand seed data format recorded and analyzed by Atlas Nanometrics program in the ENSN main center in (NRIAG) Helwan have been used. Data has been chosen according to their locations and purposes: 878 events (Abu Dabbab), 181 events (East Beni Suef), 105 events (Hurghada) and 152 events (Asyut) for relocation and 9 events (Central Egypt) for focal mechanism, 376 events (Edfu) for discrimination, and finally, 317 events (Aswan) for magnitude estimation.
Several studies including relocation, source mechanism, aeromagnetic interpretation, discrimination between earthquake and mining explosions (quarry blasts) and new local magnitude formula estimation have been carried out in the present study aiming at the evaluation of the area under investigation from seismological viewpoint.
Relocation has been achieved using Modified Joint Hypocenter Determination (MJHD) and Double-Difference HypoDD methods. Five earthquake clusters have been found in Central Egypt.
