Implementation of Bronchoscopic Conventional Transbronchial Needle Aspiration Service in Giza Chest Hospital

Abstract


Transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) is a simple, safe technique that can be performed without additional resources in any centers with a bronchoscopy service. It provides rapid diagnostic information in malignant and benign conditions and staging information in non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and may avoid the delays, risks, inpatient stay and financial implications associated with surgical exploration of the mediastinum
Therefore, the aim of this study was to implement bronchoscopic conventional transbronchial needle aspiration (C-TBNA) service in Giza Chest Hospital with special emphasis on diagnostic yield, complications encountered and learning experience
This study included sixty patients, (n=37, 61.7%) male and (n=23, 38.3%) female with mean age of (51.1±15.9) with a range of 13.0-83.0 years.
As regards clinical presentation the most common complaints were dyspnea, dry cough, cough with expectoration, chest pain, hemoptysis and weight loss and they were found in 50.0%, 20.0%, 16.7%, 15.0%, 6.7% and 1.7% of patients respectively.
