Mahmoud Shamroukh Mohamed Mahmoud;

Abstract

The present study was carried out at Shandaweel Agricultural Research Station during 199511996 and 199711998 seasons to study the following points, first the mean performance of different traits for studied crosses, analysis of variance, heterosis, general and specific combining ability and correlation between different traits. The materials used in this study were 8 bread wheat varieties differed widely in their genetic background and origin, i.e. Sakha 69, Gemmeiza 3, HD 2501, Giza 164, Turaco, Vorona/Cno 79, Sids 4 and Sids 6. The crosses and parental lines were planted in randomized complete block design with four replicates.
The results obtained during the course of study will be summarized as follows:
A- Mean performance of parents and Fl crosses:

[1]- Days to heading:- The Fl crosses gave an intermediate values between their respective parents. P3XP7 and P7XP8 were earlier than the other crosses, while P2XP4 was the latest ones. This suggesting that parental lines 3, 7 and 8 could be used as a source of earliness.
[2]- Days to maturity:- Parental lines showed a wide range for days to maturity, P2 and P7 was the earliest, while P 1 and P4 was the latest. Similarly, the crosses differed widely and P3XP7, P5XP7 and P6XP7 were the earliest.
[3]- Plant height:- A wide range of plant height was observed among parental lines. P3 was the tallest, while P7 was the shortest. Same trend was found for crosses, whereas P2XP3 and P4XP6 possessed the tallest plants, while cross P5XP8 and (P7XP8) produced the shortest plants.
