Possible role of H.pylori infection in NAFLD and Its Progression to NASH in a sector of Egyptian population

Shady Shaban Ahmed Elbasiony;

Abstract

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative and microaerophilic bacterium. The incidence of H. pylori infection in adults is particularly high in developing countries compared with developed countries.
H. pylori colonizes the stomach in childhood and persists throughout life causing diseases mainly in adults including chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and gastric cancer.
This persistent infection elicits a chronic inflammatory and immune response inducing both local and extra-gastric lesions and the interaction of the host with H. pylori can induce a systemic effects.
A systemic review and meta analysis has concluded that H.pylori as diagnosed by serum Abs and stool Ag has a role in development of early steatosis.
