The Use of Radiofrequency in Endoscopic Assisted Adenoidctomy Among Infants
Emad Mohamed Kamel Shehata;
Abstract
This study was carried out on 40 infants selected from the outpatient clinic of the E.N.T. department, Tanta University Hospitals.The age ranged between 6 and 24 months. 27 were males and 13 were females.
The infants were suffering from nasal obstruction, snoring, and most of them were suffering from obstructive sleep apnea.
All the infants were subjected to full E.N.T. examination and plain lateral - x-ray of the nasopharynx for proper diagnosis.
•
All of them were subjected to the routine investigation and preparation for general anaesthesia.
All the operations were done on the basis of one-day surgery.
Endoscopic adenoidectomy by radiofrequency was done for all the infants. The different types of endoscopic telescopes (0°, 30°, 90°, 120°) were used. The main adenoidal mass was removed by adenoidal radiofrequency curette without any pressure. Small remnants if found were removed by suction radiofrequency ablation.
The procedure was done completely under endoscopic view and was almost bloodless.
Forty infants, done by the conventional method were used as a control group for blood loss and operative time.
The improvement of symptoms was reported by the parents.
Follow-up was done later by telephone calls for 3 months.
