Congenital Glaucoma : Diagnosis and Management

Abstract


One hundred patients with congenital glaucoma attended the outpatient clinic of the Ophthalmic Departtnent of Assiut University Hospital (AUH) in the period fiom August, 1993 to May, 1996 were included in the present study. The number of eyes with congenital glaucoma was 187 eyes.



Full history, systemic and ophthalmic examinations were done for every case. The ophthalmic examination included: anterior segment examination usmg the surgical microscope, measurement ofiOP by Perking's applanation tonometer, measurement of the comeal diameters by a caliper, measurement of the axial length by A-scan ultrasonography, fundus examination by direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes (when possible), Gonioscopy using Thorpe surgical
-• gonioscope or Swan-Jacob gonioprism (when possible), and refraction using the classic retinoscopy method (when possible).



The incidence of congenital glaucoma recorded in the present study was


0. 08% of all patients calling at the Ophthalmic outpatient of ALH. This incidence was much more higher than tk:estimated in the Western Societies (0.01-0 04% of all ophthalmic patients as recorded by Duke-Elder, 1964)
