Evaluation of Different Bacteriological Methods for Diagnosis of Leukocytospermia in the Semen of Infertile Patients

Abstract

White blood cells (WBCs) are present in most human ejaculates, but abnormally high concentrations of seminal WBC may reflect an underlying pathological condition. The WHO laboratory manual for semen analysis defines leukocytes formed as seminal WBCs count more
than I Q6 I mi..

Elucidating the interaction between leukocytospermia and genital tract infection and its potential role in infertility depends on accurate assessment of WBCs in semen. The main objective ofthiswork was to correlate between the different methods of detecting leukocytospermia
and the presence of microbial infection;

The present study was carried out on thirty leukocytospermic infertile male patients, attending the Out-Patient Andrology Clinic of Tanta University Hospital. Semen samples of the thirty patients were subjected to correlate between three different methods in detection of leukocytospermia. For each sample pus cells count I HPF, detection of leukocytes by combur 9 test and peroxidase test were done. Also, each semen sample . was subjected to culture both aerobically and anaerobically together with cultures for ureaplasma and mycoplasma.

Results of the present study revealed that increased number of pus cells counted /HPF was also proved by both Combur 9 and peroxidase
