Study Of Lyme Borreliosis As A Possible Cause Of Chronic Arthritis In Egypt
Mona Hamed El Shokry;
Abstract
The aim of this work is to study Lyme borreliosis as a possible cause of chronic arthritis in Egypt. Detection of these cases will be of great help for their treatment with antibiotic therapy which is curative for most patients with Lyme borreliosis.
Tltis study was done on 90 subjects: 60 patients with chronic arthritis of undetermined etiology and 30 apparently healthy persons as a control group.
From each patient, data about age, sex, occupation, area of residence, symptoms suggestive of Lyme borreliosis and other associated symptoms were recorded. Serum samples were collected from patients and controls for the detection of IgG antibodies against B. burgdorferi flagellum antigen using the ELISA technique.
The results of the present study showed that one out of
60 patients (1.6%) was positive for B. burgdorferi IgG antibodies. The specificity of the test was confirmed by rapid plasma regain (RPR) test . The ELISA positive case was non reactive in RPR test.
The seropositive case was a male patient, at the common age of the disease (33years old), lives in El Khossos which is an area of low sanitary condition of high density of animals and ticks. Moreover, he is a cleaning worker (outdoor) where he is more exposed to ticks. He was complaining of pain and swelling in both knees for one year as the typical manifestation of Lyme artlrritis. There was no associated symptoms indicating other system affection which
