EFFECT OF SODIUM ORTHOVANADATE AND CHROMIUM CHLORIDE ON GLUCOSE-6-PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE AND ALPHA-AMYLASE IN ALLOXAN-INDUCED DIABETIC RATS
Eman Hamed Abd EI-Rahman Zeid;
Abstract
There are roughly 100 million people in the world with type 2 diabetes and this number is expected to double in the next 10 to 20 years. Throughout the world, the number of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing on a daily basis, probably due to change in lifestyle. To treat DM, which has many severe complications, several types of insulin preparations and synthetic drugs for type 1 and type 2 DM, have been developed and are in clinical use.
There are several problems concerning the insulin preparations and synthetic drugs, such as physical and psychic problems pain due to daily insulin injections together with their side effects. Consequently, a new class of therapeutic agents is anticipated.
Thus, the present work aimed to investigate, from the biochemical point of view the in vivo effect of insulin, chromium chloride and sodium orthovanadate on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in both liver tissue and red blood cells as well as alpha-amylase activity in both serum and pancreatic tissue of alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Histopathological studies were also carried out parallel to the biochemical studies, to correlate the changes in liver and pancreatic tissues and the levels of these biological parameters.
