Abstract


This essay is to present magnetic resonance of normal temporo- mandibular joint (TMJ) and technique according to the available literature.


The available literature was studied in the following orders:

1. Basic physical aspects of MR imaging.

2. Gross anatomy of the normal TMJ.

3. The biomechanics of the TMJ.

4. Certain pathological conditions that can affect the TMJ.

5. Different imaging modalities for the TMJ.

6. Normal MRI anatomy and technique of the TMJ.

7. MRI diagnostic criteria of certain pathological conditions that can affect the TMJ.

From this essay it was found that:

• The TMJ is the most complex joint in the body. It is separated into upper and lower cavities by a fibrocartilaginous disc within the joint.
• The TMJ is a significant health problem, it is reported to affect between
