Current Status in Anterior Cruciate Ligatnent Reconstruction"

Mohammad Mohammad Abdel-Bary Ibrahim;

Abstract

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the pnmary restraint to anterior displacement of the tibia on the femoral condyles .(I)

The purpose of ACL reconstruction is to prevent further knee injury and allow the return to work, sports, and activities of daily living.(?I)

Not every patient with a ruptured ACL needs reconstruction. This decision should be based on the patient's age, activity status, grade of instability, and level of motivation, and concomitant injuries to the knee. As the procedure has become less invasive, less morbid, indications for this procedure are. expanding to both younger patients with open physeal plates
to more active individuals in their fourth and fifth decades .t36

The types of graft used for ACL reconstruction are ; Autografts, Allografts, Synthetic grafts, Collagen - based ligament grafts, Xenograft, tissue- engineering grafts.t46)

Many techniques for ACL reconstruction have been designed. At present intra-articular reconstruction using auto genous graft without extra-articular augmentation is the method of choice in dealing with ACL tears. (9 I)
