Abstract


The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (METRAPLANT) is a local modification of the coasty Mirena was done by Azzam in1994.
The principal antifertility modes of action induced by the Metraplant are changes in ovarian function, suppressed endometrial growth , increased viscosity of cervical mucus, inhibition of sperm migration and sperm-egg binding .


It proved to be a very efficient contraceptive, the Pearl pregnancy rate varying from 0.1 to 1.1 per 100 woman/year. It is used for 5years.with rapid return of fertility.
Usage of the LNG-IUS is also characterized by reduction of

Menstrual blood loss and the number of days of bleeding per cycle and even amenorrhea. This beneficial effect is used in treatment of dysfunctional bleeding. It is used in prevention and treatment of endometrial hyperplasia and fibroids. It prevents pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy.
It has few menstrual and hormonal side effects, and they are the main causes of its discontinuation. Together with functional ovarian cysts and difficult Insertion.
