Customized Corneal Ablation And Wavefront Technology

Mohamed Hanafy Hashem;

Abstract

The transparent cornea represents about
80 % of the eye's total refractive power. Refractive surgical procedures work by
. altering corneal anatomy there by correcting the refractive error of the eye.

The Excimer Laser is used to perform photorefractive keratectomy and laser in situ keratomileusis, Excimer Laser emits Ultra violet beam of wavelength 193 nm sufficient to break intermolecular bonds within the cornea (photoablation) with minimal damage to surrounding stromal tissue.

Customized• ablation attempts to optimize the eye's optical system. Customization can be used to 1mprove optical quality in normal eyes as well as eyes with atypical optical aberrations caused by corneal scarring, penetrating keratoplasty, central islands, decentered ablations, and lenticular abnormalities. Customization has come to mean one of two things; topography-guided ablation and wavefront guided ablation.
