Effect of Aerobic exercise on asthma control and quality of life for patients with Asthma

Abstract

Background: Asthma remains an increasingly serious health conditions that causing decreased quality of life and even death. Improvement in asthma management would have substantial public health benefits, all current therapy guidelines emphasis the role of non-pharmacological interventions. Aim of study: to evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on asthma control and quality of life for patients with asthma. Subjects & Methods: Research design: A quasi-experimental design "time-series" was used to fulfill the aim of the study. Study Subjects: A total of 47 adult patients with mild and moderate of asthma . Study setting: the study was recruited from outpatient chest clinic of El-Minia University Hospital. Each patient’s received two sessions per week for three months. Tools of data gathering were; 1) structured interview questionnaire 2) Asthma control tool includes a) Standardized asthma control questionnaire b) Pulmonary function test and 3) Standardized asthma quality of life questionnaire. Results: Regarding age, it was 20-59 with mean age 46.6 ±11.02 years old. There are significant differences regarding asthma control and quality of life after practicing aerobic exercises. Conclusion: Performing aerobic exercise regularly had significantly improved asthma control and quality of life in mild and moderate patients with asthma. Recommendation: Education of patients with asthma is needed to achieve an optimal level of healthy life. Also hospital should implement a plan of action to practice aerobic exercise for patients with asthma across life span.
