Abstract

Abstract
Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a key component of the burden of cardiovascular crises, which is a common presentation of ischemic heart disease. Modifiable risk factors reduction and secondary prevention are crucial to reducing risk and suffering after AMI. Patient-centered care (PCC) empower patients to become active participants in their care and positively affects health-related behaviors. Aim of the study: to evaluate the effectiveness of patient-centered care after AMI in relation to modifiable risk factors reduction and secondary prevention. Subjects& Methods: Research design: A quasi-experimental design was used to fulfill the aim of the study. Setting: Patients with AMI were recruited from recovery care unit (RCU) for patients who discharged from cardiac care unit (CCU) & completed in the outpatient cardiac clinic to follow up in Minia University hospital, El-Minia Governorate, Egypt Subjects: A total of 77 patients with AMI were recruited. Tools of data collection: Three tools were developed and used by researchers: Structured interview questionnaire, patient's knowledge of AMI, and Secondary prevention for AMI questionnaire. Results: the mean age of the studied sample was 56.275.17years old. There were statistically significant differences regarding the level of knowledge, modifiable risk factors reduction (smoking, weight, abdominal circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol level & exercise) and secondary prevention between the pre/post-test after PCC(P<0.05*). Conclusion: patient-centered care program had significantly improved patient's level of knowledge, the practice of exercise, reduction in modifiable risk factors and improved secondary prevention among the patients under study. Recommendation: Nurses have an active role in up raising awareness of patient with Acute myocardial infarction I regarding modifiable risk factors and secondary prevention by implementing PCC program.
