Relationship between Resilience, Burnout and Professional Quality of Life among Nurses Working at El-Abbassiya Psychiatric-Mental Health Hospital

Abstract


Resilience confirmed as a key variable influencing levels of burnout
and thus, a potentially important variable to target in interventions aimed at improving
nurses' professional quality of life. The present study conducted to assess the relationship
between resilience, burnout and professional quality of life among nurses working at
El-Abbassiya Psychiatric-Mental Health Hospital. The Study carried out at the in-patient
departments of El-Abbassiya Governmental Hospital for Psychiatric-Mental Health in Cairo,
affiliated to the General Secretariat of Mental Health and Ministry of Health of Egypt. A
descriptive correlational design used. A purposive sample of 100 psychiatric nurses was
selected. The tools used for data collection were; 1) Demographic questionnaire, 2)
Connor-Davidson Resilience scale, 3) Maslach Burnout Inventory, and 4) Professional
Quality Of Life scale (ProQOL). The main results showed that, there was a highly
statistically significant correlation among resilience, burnout and professional quality of life.
The study recommended; continuous evaluation of nurses' resilience, burnout and
professional quality of life for regular programs to increase nurses' resilience and compassion
satisfaction levels and reduce the experience of burnout and secondary traumatic stress need
to be designed and implemented.
