Effect of Traditional versus E-learning on Nursing Students' Academic Achievement

Abstract


Background: E-learning has become an increasingly popular learning approach in higher educational institutions due to the rapid growth of Internet technologies. E-learning is the use of information and communication technology (ICT) to describe the fields of online learning, web- based training and technology delivered instructions .This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of traditional versus e-learning on nursing Students’ academic achievement. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia. The Sample of the present study were selected as a convenience sampling of all available female nursing students(105)from the 4thlevel of faculty of nursing, King Khalid University and these students divided into two groups(55)students for e- learning study and (50) students for traditional study. Design: Quasi-experimental design was used. The results of this study: illustrated that 51.4 % of the nursing Students' were 20 years of age. 91.4 % of the nursing Students' were residency with family and 95.2% of their family incomes were Satisfying. 44. 8% of the nursing students were single, and the effect size of the independent variable (E-learning) on the dependent variable (students' achievement) is 1.34 which is a high value that has a large effect on the improvement of the student's total knowledge achievement compared to the traditional teaching. This study concluded that e- learning has revealed that there is a statistically significant difference between the two methods in terms of nursing students' achievement. This study recommended that further experimental studies need to be conducted to establish the effectiveness of e-learning on students‟ attitudes. Also, the effectiveness of synchronous virtual classrooms on students‟ achievement as well as other courses needs to be investigated.
