Effect of knee Exercise on Pain and Among Patients with Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

gendy,jackleen;

Abstract

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is common surgical knee procedure that requires intensive
postoperative rehabilitation by the patient; Aim of study: this study was carried out to determine the effect of knee range of
motion exercise on pain and activity after arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Methods: This study was carried
out in orthopedic department at Ain shams university hospital. A Purposive sample of 60 patients undergoing arthroscopic
Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction was assigned alternatively into two equal groups, 30 patients for each group. Three
tools were utilized for data collection; Tool 1; structure interview questionnaire which included three parts covering sociodemographic data, medical history, and patient's knowledge. Tool 2; Anterior Knee Pain Scale. Tool 3; bio physiological measures
of knee ligament injuries. Results: The mean age of the study group was 31.9±6.3years as compared to 30.4±6.2years for control
group. There was a statistical significant improvement of a mean total knowledge score regarding definition, causes, signs&
symptoms of ACL injury and type of AC L treatment of the study group than control group at 1st and 4th weeks post intervention.
The patient who exposed to ROM exercises after ACL reconstruction had a reduction in knee pain and improvement of daily
living activity. Conclusions: There was a positive relation between performance of knee range of motion exercise after
arthroscopic ACL reconstruction and pain reduction of the study group than control group.
