Relationship Between Academic Nurse Educators 'Burnout and Organization Work Climate

Abstract


in general academic nurse educators undertake a great responsibility in their organizations.
As a matter of fact, this high level of responsibility is often combined with low decision-making
power, job stress and burnout. AIM of the study: to assess the relationship between academic
nurse educators' burnout and organization work climate. Design: a cross sectional descriptive
design SETTING: all departments in the Faculty of Nursing in Ain Shams and Bennha
Universities. SAMPLING: A convenient sample encompasses all academic nurse educators at
the time of data collection, at Ain Shams University (n=152) and Bennha University (n=94) at
the academic year 2011-2012. Two tools were used to collect data. Tool I: consists of the
academic nurse educators' burnout scale developed by Seidman and Zager(1999)is formulated
to assess academic educators’ burnout. Tool II: is composed of organizational work climate
questionnaire, developed by the researcher to elicit information about organizational work
climate from academic nurse educators' perspective. This is in addition to the demographic
characteristics. RESULTS: They revealed a significant positive intermediate correlation was
found between burnout and the following organizational work climate domains: physical and
economic factors, job overload and role conflict, communication channels and decision making
in both universities. In addition, the study also showed that the mean score of burnout in Ain
Shams was higher than that in Bennha. Furthermore, there was a statistical significant difference
in burnout and physical, economical, overload, role conflict, team work and decision making in
both Universities. Moreover, there was a statistical significant difference between burnout and
different departments in Bennha University. CONCLUSION: academic nurse educators
experienced stress and burn out in nursing faculties. In fact; there is a significant positive
intermediate correlation between burnout and organizational work climates.
RECOMMENDATION: Awareness and counseling for academic nurse educators should be
conducted to detect early signs and symptoms and factors reliving burnout. An intervention
study should be performed to reduce burnout.
