? Helicobacter Pylori Bacterium : is it an enemy or a frind to GERD
Ahmed Desouki;
Abstract
Recent data suggested that H. pylori is one of the maJOr aetiological factors in chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, GERD.
This study lends further support to the theory that patients may be protected ti•01n gastro-esophageal retlux disease by H. pylori infection, and that eradication of this infection may induce retlux. These tindings need to be continned by prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled trials comparing H. pylori eradication within difterent patient populations (other than known ulcer patients). We also demonstrated that these effects are not attributable to weight change or habits.
Further studies will also need to address whether this increased incidence of retlux disease is present only in the short-term or persists a tier several years post-treatment.
