THE HISTOLOGICAL, ULTRASTRUCTURAL AND CYTOGENETIC EFFECTS OF CERTAIN DRUGS ON SOME BODY ORGANS OF A MAMMALIAN ANIMAL

Amena El- Hosseany Mohammed;

Abstract

The present study 'aims at studying the effects of each of the two drugs Methotrexate and Longactin on the histology and ultrastructure of the liver and kidneys of the mouse as well as on the bone marrow chromosomes of such animal. Also, the present work aims at studying the combined effect of such two drugs- a trial to disclose the adverse effect of drug- drug interaction.

The therapeutic dose or each of methotrexate and longactin to the mouse weighing 20 g was calculated to be 0.13
mg and 1.28 mg respectively. With each drug the animals were alloted into groups to accommodate various regimes of dosages and illustrate the potential effects of each drug on the two organs of choice, i.e. liver and kidneys as well as on the bone marrow chromosomes. The present study showed clearly that methotrexate or/ and longactin has/ have devastated effects on the histological and ultrastructure of both liver and kidneys. The cytogenetic studies showed that the two tested drugs, either separately or combined induced a high percentage of chromosomal aberrations. This study
. also shed light on the issue of drug-drug interaction
