Endoscopic Evaluation of Eustachian Tube in Otitis Media witli Effusion

Ashraf Mohamed Medhat Mesbah;

Abstract

Otitis media with effusion is the commonest cause of hearing difficulty and one of the most common reasons for surgical admission during childhood. So this study was performed using endoscopy to evaluate eustachian tube factors involved in the causation of otitis media with effusion in children.

Our study included 50 children with otitis media with effusion not responding to medical treatment and prepared for myringotomy and tube insertion under general anesthesia. All patients were subjected to complete evaluation as well as basic and special criteria of selection.

In our study adenoid tissue hypertrophy engorgement on the eustachian tube orifice was the main cause of otitis media with effusion (68%).

Nasopharyngoscopy was found to be more accurate and

• helpful than radiological examination of the nasopharynx in showing whether adenoid tissue mass obstructing eustachian tube or not.

Tympanometry was found to be an effective test for diagnosis of otitis media with effusion.
