Chemical Investigations Related to the Removal of Certain Hazardous Elements from Waste Solutions

Mahmoud Ali Mohamed Hasan;

Abstract

The present work includes detailed studies on two essential problems, the first is the removal of some hazardous elements like, Th(IV), U(VI), and Co(!!) from nuclear waste solutions using liquid emulsion membrane technique (LEM). The second one is the removal of U(VI) from phosphoric acid using extraction chromatography technique.
The work carried out in this thesis is presented in three main chapters, namely; introduction, experimental, and results and discussion.
The first chapter, the introduction, includes the aim of work; hazardous waste classification; highlights on the chemistry of the investigated elements; thorium, uranium, and cobalt; some separation techniques like, extraction chromatography and liquid emulsion membrane; uranium recovery from phosphoric acid. This chapter also includes literature survey on the extraction of metal ions using (LEM) and extraction chromatography techniques and literature survey on the removal of uranium from phosphoric acid.
In the second chapter, the experimental, detailed outlines are given on the chemicals, reagents and the instruments used as well as the analytical techniques. This chapter also includes liquid emulsion
i;. membrane preparation and stability and the permeation procedures. The

procedures of extraction equilibrium in extraction chromatography was presented including, the loading of support materials with stationary phase, determination of distribution coefficient, and preparation of chromatographic column.
