SPECIFIC EFFECTS OF SOME HEAVY METALS ON GROWTH AND METABOLIC CHANGES IN ZEA MAYS SEEDLINGS
Amal Abd El-Naby Tamam Othman;
Abstract
In this investigation, Zea mays grains were used for studying the effect of some heavy metals (Cd++, Pb++, Hg++ or Cron activity
of a-amylase and its isoforms as well as on the changes in the carbohy drate and nitrogeneous fractions in the different organs of maize seed lings during germination and growth.
For estimation of a-amylase activity, the grains were first surface sterilized then germinated and grown in sand. The pots were irrigated with water supplemented with 0, 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100 ppm ofCd++, Pb++, Hg++ or Cr+++ (as chlorides) at the second and tenth days from soaking. The pots were placed under laboratory conditions and irrigated with distilled water every other day.
In other experiments, the grains were first germinated and grown for
10 days then transferred to 250-ml flasks containing 100 ml of 1/10
Hoagland solution alone (control) or supplemented with 5, 10, 20, 50,
100 ppm of Cd++ , Pb++ , Hg++ or Cr+++ as chlorides. Samples were taken from each treatment, dissected into shoots and roots and saved for enzyme assay. Others were dried and saved for determination of carbohydrate and nitrogenous fractions.
