Abstract
information
Over the past decade, there has been a remarkable growth of interest in environmental issues, in sustainability, better planning and management of
development in harmony with the environment.
The Egyptian government has made a great step towards the environmental issues by applying the low No. 4 for the year 1994 .The environmental management since then had taken a great steps towards enhancing our living urban spaces.
Alexandria was the old capital of Egypt and one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean Sea. It lies on the northern coast of Egypt and one of the most attraction points to the inner tourism in sunm1er holidays. The current renaiss-ance of Alexandria to regain its beauty as "The Bride of the Mediterranean " gives us a motivation for further development of our lovely cityscape, especially the upt:,rrade of the degraded urban areas.
El-Mahmoudia Canal is the main source of drinking water for Alexandria residents. It runs along the south edge of the city and served as a natural boundary of the city just before its deterioration as the rural land on the southern side of the canal had rapidly turned into industries to benefit from its water and finally into slums and degraded urban areas. There was a vital need to rehabilitate the Canal and restore the environment along its sides. One of our most successful, important and effective projects is the rehabilitation of El Mahmoudia Canal. To light up the way for future successful, confident projects; it is far important to study this magnificent project in order to focus at its environmental effect and to put this successful experiment under study and investigation.
The aim of this study is to build up a GIS for the study area, to observe the environmental, urban and social change as a direct and indirect result of the rehabilitation project of El Mahmoudia Canal, to evaluate the project impact on the canal physics and the current urban situation of the developed study area after the project, and finally , to support decision makers, planners and the Governorate of future actions to be a guide line in the next phases of the project or other similar projects.
The Geographic i nformation system (GIS) was chosen as a platform for this
