Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the use of remam1ng mandibular cuspids in conjunction with osseointegrated root-form implants to support mandibular telescopic prosthesis. Restplants were used in this study to investigate their efficiency as distal support implants in tooth implant supported prosthetic restorations. Telescopic prosthetic superstructures with a cantilevered design were compared with a distal support design to investigate which was more preservative to abutments.

Twelve patients were selected, each having two mandibular remaining canines and completely edentulous maxilla. Root canal treatment was performed for the canines. Each patient received three 3.75mm diameter root form titanium implants in the anterior region of the mandible between the two remaining canines. Then patients were divided into two groups. For group I, a cantilevered telescopic mandibular tooth-implant supported prosthetic superstructure was constructed for each patient extending posteriorly till the first molar region. For group II, the telescopic prosthetic superstructure were supported posteriorly by two distal support resplants bilaterally in the frrst molar region of the mandible. For both groups, patients received a maxillary complete denture with balanced occlusal scheme.
