The Role of Platelet Rich Plasma as a New Modality in Induced Osteoarthritis Versus Corticosteroids in Adult Male Albino Rats
Maha Abbas Helmi Mansour;
Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of arthritis affecting millions of people annually and among top ten causes of disability worldwide. OA is a whole joint disease where all the joint components are affected. Although cartilage destruction is the hallmark of OA, yet synovitis, subchondral bone remodeling and degeneration of menisci, also take parts in the pathogenesis of OA. Osteoarthritis can be treated by life style modification, pharmacological therapy and surgical intervention in advanced non-responsive cases. Intra-articular injections are preferred as the last non-operative modality; it includes corticosteroids, hyalouronic acid and blood-derived products. As a blood product, PRP is considered simple, low cost, and minimally invasive way to obtain a concentration of many growth factors and biologically active molecules that may have possible cartilage regeneration abilities.
