Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of maxillary midline diastema in adult Egyptian population and its relation to corresponding etiological causes.

A random sample consisted of 5021 subjects (2521 females and

2500 males) with age ranged from 16-30 years were selected. All subjects were investigated by taking a detailed case history and thorough clinical examination. While periapical radiographs and orthodontic study models were taken only for individuals having maxillary midline diastema.

From the orthodontic study model, diastema width, oveijet, over bite, and mesiodistal width of maxillary anterior teeth were measured in millimeter. The collected data were statistically analyzed.

From the obtained results the following conclusions could be

drawn:

1- The prevalence of maxillary midline diastema was found to be

3.1% among the Egyptian population sample.

2- The prevalence of maxillary midline diastema was significantly greater among the Egyptian females group (3.9%), than males group (2.4%).
