Screening for Depression in Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Alaaeldeen Nouby Mohamed Elazab;
Abstract
iabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Metabolic abnormalities in carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins result from the importance of insulin as an anabolic hormone.
Type 1 diabetes is a risk factor for the development of psychiatric disorders in children. A study of children with diabetes found that one third had psychiatric disorders, most involving internalizing symptoms; other studies have shown that they have greater rates of depression and that those with depression have poor glycemic control so educational, Psychosocial and psychotherapeutic interventions are frequently combined for the purpose of improving knowledge, skills and self-efficacy across various aspects of diabetes self-management.
