The Effect of Triple Antibiotic Paste as an Intracanal Medication with an Anti-Inflammatory Drug on Post-Operative Pain of Asymptomatic Uniradicular Necrotic Teeth .A Double Blind Randomized Clinical Trial.

Abstract

This clinical study was conducted to compare the degree of postoperative

pain and the antibacterial effect of two different intracanal medicaments: calcium hydroxide and triple antibiotic paste with Catafast as an anti-inflammatory drug in patients with uniradicular necrotic teeth after multiple-visit root canal treatment using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at 24, 48 and 72-hrs. The study design was a double blinded randomized clinical trial as study participants and assessor did not know which intervention has been received. Eighty-four patients with uniradicular necrotic teeth received multiple-visit root canal treatment using ProTaper Universal rotary system for canal preparation. They were randomly divided into two groups (n=42) according to the type of the intracanal medicaments used, either calcium hydroxide or triple antibiotic paste with Catafast as an anti-inflammatory drug. Pain was assessed using the VAS at 24, 48 and 72-hrs post-operatively as well as bacterial reduction was assessed using colony forming unit test and optical density test with different dilutions. All demographic data, clinical and VAS scores obtained from patients were analyzed and the results showed similarity between both groups regarding age, gender distribution and tooth type. An observable drop in pain levels in both groups was recorded at 24, 48 and 72-hrs. There was no statistically significant difference in VAS score values between both groups at 24 and 72 hours. However, at 48 hours the mean VAS scores were significantly lower in TAP+Catafst group than that of Ca(OH)2 group.
