EFFECT OF INCINERATOR'S ASH ON THE MICROSTRUCTURAL, PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE
MOSTAFA ELSAYED ALLAM;
Abstract
With the development of industrial activities and improvement of living standards, the
. .
amount of wastes generated by society has continuously increased. The treatment and
disposal of waste becomes a serious social problem because of scarcity of land fodisposal, the complexity of the methods oftreatment and the high cost of treatment and disposal of wastes. The waste material disposal become one of the major environmental, economical and social problems plaguing Egypt as well as other parts of the world. An integrated wast management approach including: source reduction, reuse, recycling, land filling and incineration should be implemented in Egypt to control the increasing waste disposal problems. Recycling the ash after waste's incineration is one of the most promising solutions to dispose materials in the waste stream and one of the most promising markets to utilize recycled waste materials successfully is the construction industry.
The waste materials that can be used in making concrete are very many (crushed glass aggregate, combustible wastes such as used tires, oils, residual dust after combustion, plastics, coal and aluminum ash etc. some ofthese have been tried with some success whilst others are yet to be tried regarding the feasibility of using them in concrete making. The form in which they are used is wide and varied , they may be used as a binder material, as partial replacement of conventional Portland cement or directly as aggregate in their natural or processed states.
