olorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among men & women accounting for 10.2% of new cases in men & 9.5% in women in 2018, and the second leading cause of cancer death in males & third leading cause of cancer death in females worldwide.
According to Globocan (2018), over 1.8 million new colorectal cancer cases and 881,000 deaths are estimated to occur in 2018, accounting for about 1 in 10 cancer cases and deaths. Colorectal cancer is placed third in terms of incidence and second in terms of mortality.
Colorectal cancer is the 7th most frequent cancer in Egypt, representing 3.47% of male cancers and 3% of female cancers. The rated number of colon cancer patients (excluding rectal cancer) in 2015 was slightly more than three thousand.
These improvements in incidence of and mortality from CRC over past years are attributed to better cancer prevention programs, screening and improved treatment modalities.
There are various risk factors for colorectal cancer including, advanced age, positive family history, alcohol intake, obesity, smoking, consumption of unprocessed meats, obesity, inflammatory bowel syndrome, Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis.
