EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) ON THE ESTHETIC OUTCOME AND SCAR FORMATION OF UNILATERAL CLEFT LIP REPAIR BY MODIFIED MILLARD CHEILOPLASTY (A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRAIL)
Shaimaa Mohsen Refahee;
Abstract
The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of PRP on unilateral complete cleft lip repair and the esthetic outcome of the resulting scar.
A total of twenty-four children (9 females and 15 males) with an average age of 128 days were selected from the outpatient clinic of Pediatric Plastic Surgery Department, the Specialized Pediatric Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. All patients were randomized into two equal groups:
Group A (Study group):- Patients were treated with modified Millard technique and PRP injection on each side of suture lines of the muscle and the skin layers.
Group B (Control group):- Patients were treated with modified Millard technique only.
The patients were recalled at the intervals 1 week, 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively for follow up visits and photos were taken for postoperative evaluation. Patients were evaluated at 6 months for assessment of scar width through the muscle via ultrasound, in addition to the scar width at the skin surface and philtrum symmetry using CPLA. Also, patients were evaluated at 1, 3, and 6 months for assessment of scar quality by VSS.
