Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical, radiographic and cytological changes in the supporting structures of the denture bearing areas to the two types of denture bases (acrylic denture bases, and acrylic dentures lined with thermoplastic resilient liner).

For this purpose, twenty male patients were selected with edentulous upper and lower jaws.

The patients were divided equally into two main groups:

For Group (A) (control Group), complete upper and lower acrylic dentures were constructed.

For Group (B) (test Group), complete acrylic upper and lower dentures lined by thermoplastic resilient liner were constructed.

Clinical and cytological evaluation of the alveolar mucosa was performed periodically before denture insertion, six and twelve months after denture insertion, to study the changes in the alveolar mucosa in both groups.

Radiographic evaluation was done before denture insertion, six and twelve months later to measure the amount of resorption of the residual ridge, and the changes in the bone density in both groups. It was found that;
After six months of denture insertion no significant difference was found between anterior and posterior regions in. the alveolar bone resorption in both control and test groups, while after twelve months of
