MYOGLOBIN VERSUS CARDIAC ENZYMES IN EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION

Mona Sobhi Arian Botros;

Abstract

The early hours of acute myocardial infarction are a critical period as more than 60% of the deaths associated with acute myocardial infarction occur within the first hours of the event. Early treatment with thrombolytic therapy restores myocardial blood flow (reperfusion) and reduces mortality. So early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction is mandatory.

The aim of this study is to evaluate a new approach for early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction by immunoturbidimetric myoglobin assay. Also, we compare this test with other important investigations which are used to diagnose myocardial infarction such as: ECG changes, serum creatine kinase and creatine kinase-MB. This study included thirty patients in whom the onset of pain had occurred within six hours before admission and a control group of ten apparently healthy individuals. All the patients were admitted to the Coronary Care Unit of Alexandria UDiversity Hospital. They were 23 males and 7 females. They averaged 53.06 years. Controls were six males and four females and averaged 52.3 years.

All the patients were subjected to a thorough history taking, full clinical examination, electrocardiogram, serum myoglobin and serum enzymes estimation. They were selected so as to be free of other causes
