Risk Factors Effect on Roads Construction Projects in Egypt

Ahmed Ibrahim Abdel Tawab Rady;

Abstract

• Egypt started executing many projects as a part of an ambitious overall development plan which will extend for several years. The development plan includes roads network expansion and maintenance as roads network is the backbone of the land transportation network. Road construction projects faced many risks due to many political and economic decisions like currency exchange rate and the result was cost and time overruns.
• Lack of risk management in Egyptian road construction projects is due to lack of data about risks in Egypt as most of the researches in this field has covered projects in East Asia, the United States, and Europe.
Literature review
• Roads construction goes through several steps starting with feasibility and preliminary studies stage (exploratory studies - primary studies - in details studies) followed by engineering stage (geometric design - structural design – contracting – construction) and ending with operation and maintenance stage.
• Road construction projects are always unique, inherently complex, dynamic, and involving multiple feedback processes. Road construction projects involve different stages and multi works items with many details. A lot of parties are either directly or indirectly involved in the construction project, and their interests may be positively or negatively affected as a result of the project execution or project completion. Different participants with different experience and skills usually have different expectations and interests. Road construction projects differ from other kinds of construction projects that it extends for long distances. This means variable geological conditions
