ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF SURFACE WATER POLLUTANTS ON SHALLOW GROUNDWATER QUALITY

Abstract
To perform the main objective and specific objectives of this thesis the following
steps were accomplished:
1. Review of available literature relevant to the subject.
2. Identify previous data from hydro and geological map and describe the physical, geological and hydrological conditions in study area.
3. Investigate the field to collect water samples from groundwater wells and drains located in the study area and defined the real situation of water quality in it by analysis and determine all chemical and biological properties for these samples.
4. Apply numerical simulation flow model to draw flow pattern and estimate
the amount of inflow and outflow of study area region using Visual MODFLOW Pro.V.4.6 software.
5. Knowing pollutants particles migration track by using MOTPATH engine, pollution parameters concentration and its behavior in groundwater aquifer system
using MT3D engine.
6. Assess pollutant transportation impact after 50 years under three scenarios;
Frist scenario distribute current concentration of pollutant as line source of pollution on main drains covered, Second scenario distribute double value of current concentration and Third one distribute max allowable value as a worst case.
7. Propose and recommend alternative mitigation measures to control the negative impacts of pollutants.
