OPERATIVE VERSUS NON OPERATIVE REDUCTION OF INFANTILE INTUSSUSCEPTION, COMPARATIVE STUDY

Abstract


This study was performed on 90 pediatric patients diagnosed clinicaly and sonographicaly as infantile intussusception .



This study took place at Assiut. University Hospital m the period from July 1999 to March 2001. There were 62 males and 28
females, their ages were under two years.

There were seasonal incidence during spnng, summer and

midwinter. In most cases no detectable cause could be demonestrated. The ninty patients diagnosed as early and classic intussusception were subjected to non operative methods of reductions which include; hydrostatic reduction by using gastrographin enema under fluoroscopy or pneumatic reduction under fluroscopy or by using saline enema reduction under sonographic-guidance. Twinty patients diagnosed as neglected intussusception were excluded from this study and subjected to urgent surgical interference. The cases of successfull non operative reduction was observed in the hospital for 24 hours. The cases of failed reduction were subjected to operative interferance. The result of successfull reduction in the group of saline enema under sonographic-guidance is the highest and the best result (76.7%) in comparison to hydrostatic reduction by gastrographin enema (58.7%) and pneumatic reduction (60%).
