A Systematic Review of Patellar Resurfacing in Total Knee Arthroplasty
Mohammad Rashad Mohammad Swelm;
Abstract
Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is a reliable orthopaedic procedure used to correct knee deformities, relieve pain and improve knee function usually following arthritis.
Aim of the Work: Patellar resurfacing in total knee arthroplasty remains controversial. The aim of this study is to evaluate this technique through an analysis of comparative studies in the current study.
Patients and Methods: The review is randomized controlled trial which studied the patellar resurfacing in total knee replacement. Our review included studies published in English. Studies that published on PUBMED, MEDLINE, Cochrane, CINAHL, and EMBASE databases
Results: This systematic review has not brought the subject of patellar resurfacing to a conclusion. However, it has provided additional information regarding patellar resurfacing that may prove invaluable for orthopaedic surgeons in counseling their patients or deciding on the course of action regarding patellar resurfacing during primary TKA.
Conclusion: Our results showed an advantage in resurfacing the patella during total knee replacement for patellofemoral criteria, anterior knee pain, patient's satisfactions and rate of revisions. However, this conclusion must be moderated by the fact that many confounding factors exist; this illustrates the difficulty of controlled trials in surgery and appraising generalization of results. Despite the limitations inherent in this meta-analysis, it is necessary to know that the studies evaluated represent the best available in the literature. There is a crucial need for more high quality studies in this field if the orthopaedic surgeon wants to be able to make an evidence-based decision.
