AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF GASEOUS FLAMES ISSUING FROM AN AIR-STAGED BURNER

HASSAN SADEK MOHAMED;

Abstract

This thesis dscribes the study carried out to investigate the problem of NOx formation during turbulent diffusion combustion, using a new combustor design. This combustor is claimed to be capable of reducing the noxious emissions such as fuel bound and thermal nitrogen oxide products [1]. 1t may be employed in different ranges of equivalence ratio, fuel flow rate and combustor appJications including; heating of large water boiler products, burning of paper and developing of high pressure gases used in the generation of turbine power . The present work is devoted to extensive study on this combustor. Based on the basic features of the combustor described in the original patent [1 ], a combustor is designed , manufactured and assembled with the necessary auxiliaries in the mechanical power labs. of Ain Shams university.
In the present study an experimental investigation is conducted on the exit temperature, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides issuing from an air staged combustor. The fuel used is the commercial butane. The problem parameters investigated are the mass ratio (rn 1/ rnt), the fuel flow rate (m.)
• and the equivalence ratio () approaches stoichiometric. The NOx concentration decreases by decreasing the mass ratio (i.e. by increasing the degree of air staging).This is linked with an increase in the local equivalence ratio above unity and the consequent drop in the temperature of this zone. Carbon dioxide concentrations were also correlated to the high temperature
