ROLE OF MYCOBACTERIAL GROWTH INDICATOR TUBE (MGIT) IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND ASSESSMENT OF DRUG SENSITIVITY OF PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS
MOHAMED RUSSIN KAMEL EL-SAID;
Abstract
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that causes a senous health problem because of its increasing incidence and emergence of multidrug resistant strains, therefore, a correct diagnosis of tuberculosis and early detection of the organism in clinical samples become more and more important in the control of tuberculosis.
The mm of this study is to evaluate the role of advanced fluorometric manual mycobacterial detection using mycobacterial growth indicator tube (MGIT) compared to ordinary conventional method Lewenstein Jensen media (L-J) as regarding specificity, sensitivity, rapidity of diagnosis and for drug susceptibility testing.
This study was carried out on 50 subjects, 40 tuberculous
'
patients were classified into 20 with sputum smear +ve patients, (1 0)
sputum smear -ve patients, and (1 0) tuberculous patients with history of previous anti-tuberculous chemotherapy and 10 patients with chest diseases other than tuberculosis, pneumonia, chronic bronchitis and broncheatsis.
Sputum samples were collected from the patients in sterile screw wide mouth cups and tested for the presence of mycobacterial tuberculosis (M.T.B) bacilli by cultures on L.J culture and the recent culture method, mycobacterial growth indicator tube (MGIT).
