BEHAVIOR OF STEEL GIRDERS WITH CORRUGATED WEBS WITH AND WITHOUT OPENINGS

MOHAMED SAAD ZAGHLOUL;

Abstract

The corrugated steel plate is widely used as structural element in many fields of applications because of its favourable properties and it has been applied since the 1920s. In the last 20 years, it has been increasingly used in air craft design, ship building, containers, as cold-formed webs for long span beams and later for civil engineering applications in buildings and bridges.
The main scope of this research is to study the behavior of steel girders with corrugated webs with and without openings. First, the different methods of calculating the warping constant for steel girders with corrugated webs are illustrated which are obtained from the previous studies. Second, the different parameters that affect the behavior of these girders are studied such as web thickness, web height, flange thickness, flange width and corrugation depth. Third, the behvior of steel girders with different shapes of corrugations are compared whether trapezoidal, triangular or rectangular. Finally, the behvior of corrugated steel girders without openings and those with openings in the web are compared for different positions of the openings.
To achieve the aims of this study, the finite element analysis is performed using ANSYS vr.18.2 program. Girders are simulated using element type SHELL181 with elastic perfect plastic material. All girders are simply supported beams and subjected to two end moment to study the lateral torsional buckling behavior under pure moment.
