Abstract

The interactive effects of NaCI and some water-soluble vitamins were
investigated to test whether the vitamins (ascorbic acid, thiamin or pyridoxine) can ameliorate the adverse effects of salinity on plant b'TOWth and the relevant met<1bolic activities. The results can be summarized in the f()I]O\Ving:

A-Seed germination. seedling gro vv1h and biosyntheses ofsome cellular components.

1- The salinizing agent (NaCI) especially when supplied in high concentration (200 mi\11) inhibited the germination of maize grains and suntlo vver seeds.

.2- Tl1e linear growth of radicle and plumule as well as the fresh and dry matter yields of maize grains and sunflower seeds were sharply reduced. more prominently' at high levels of salinity
( 150-200 mi\11).

3- The increase in NaCI supply, generally, exerted a signitlcant stimulatory etfect on the rate of respiration of the test plants. The highest respiration rate of the seedlings was consistently tound in plants grown under the highest NaCI levels.

4- The application of each of the three vitamins (ascorbic acid. thiamin or pyridoxine) partially or completely counteracted the adverse ettects of the high salinity levels on grain or seed germination. seedling growth and respiration rate, a response which was, generally, accompanied by the accumulation ofsome cellular components in the salt-stressed tissues.

8-Grain or seed soaking in vitamins modified the salt-stressed induced changes in transpiration rate. growth criteria and chemical composition of the test plants.

1- The loss of \Vater via transpiration was reduced with grain or seed soaking in any ofthe three applied vitamins.
