Abstract

Thy le<;:tromagnetic, environme.nt (;1ssociatec! with high voltage AC

transmission ;;y,stem <;:ontinuous to generate i;; Lieof some concern. The environmental ffects of ekctric fields have been studLed ince the mid
1960's, but the effects of magnetic fields gained publicity only during the last decade as a result of several controversial epidemiological studies.

The Egyptian Extra High Voltage (EHV )transmission network includes about 2249 kmof 500 leV lines and about 11909 km of220 kV l.ines.lt is WOiih to mention that long lengths of this network cross populated areas such as Bassous, Shoubra El-Khiema andEl Khosous; suburbs of Greater Cairo. Accordingly,• it appears clesirable to evallJale to magnetic field distributions in populated areas close to EHV transmis:>ion lines.

The current stt1dy presents a comparative risk. analysis due to the exposure to magnetic fielcls of EI-IV transmission lines (500 kV and
220 kV). Simulation ofa house with different orientations and proximity to 500 kV anci 220 kV transmission lines is presented to assess the magnetic field distribution inside the simulated house at different heights
apove ground.
