Radiation Processing of Polymers and Its Application In Some Ind ustrial Waste Treatment

AFAF ABDEL- MAKSOUD MOHAMED IMAM;

Abstract

This research deals with the preparation of different graft copolymers having various functional groups. Direct radiation grafting of acrylamide (AAm) and vinyl acetate(VAc) comonomer mixture onto heavy duty polyethelyne (HDuPE) & polypropylene (PP) films was carried out. . Chemical treatment of the grafted membranes with KOH was performed to obtain membranes with more polar groups and to improve their applicability in liquid waste treatment. The prepared membranes are investigated for the possible use in practical applications .

The study is divided into three main parts :

)
-
i. Preparation of the grafted membranes including
optimization of the conditions at which the grafting process proceeds successfully.

11. Characterization of the prepared grafted membranes using FTIR, DSC , TGA, XRD and SEM to investigate their physical and chemical properties. The change in their mechanical improvement in hydrophilicity, conductivity and permeability with grafting were carried out .

m. The possibility of their application in the field of waste treatment such as the removal of heavy metal ions and radioactive nuclides from their liquid wastes was investigated.
