SMOKING AND NON ULCER DYSPEPSIA A CLINICO - ENDOSCOPIC AND BACTERIOPA THO LOGICAL STUDY

Abstract


Cigarette smoking is considered one of the risk factors that causes gastric mucosa! changes either directly or indirectly, (irritation -ciliotoxic, neuro endocrinal effects). These changes helps combinationof the individual symptoms and a good envirorunent for increasing Helicobacter pylori infection.



Our study was done on 40 patients all of them complaining of non ulcer dyspeptic symptoms and attending endoscopy unit for upper gastro intestinal tract examination. The studied patients comprised two groups, first included 20 smoking males, their ages ranged between 20 - 60 years average 35 years).



The second group included 12 (60%) non smoking females and 8 (40o/o) non smoking males, average age (32 years). Every patient was subjected to the following :
1- Medical history and clinical examination.

2- Upper gastro - intestinal tract endoscopy and multiple biopsy specimens were taken from gastric antrum and first part of duodenum.



- Each biopsy specimen was subjected to :

- Histopathological examination for all characteristics of gastro- duodenal mucosa, as - erosion - gland atrophy. Congestion of lamina propria and the degree of infiltration by chronic inflammatory cells.
