Abstract

his retrospective observational study was conducted on patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for morbid obesity at Ain-Shams University Hospitals. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy as a bariatric procedure.
A total of 30 cases were included, and they were subjected to complete history taking, thorough physical examination, and routine laboratory investigations. Upper GI endoscopy was ordered for all cases to exclude reflux.
The mean age of the included cases was 34.16 years (range, 19 – 45). We included 24 females (80%) in addition to 6 males (20%). The mean operative time was 59.35 minutes (range, 45 – 90).
Regarding early complications, reactionary haemorrhage was encountered in 1 case (3.33. Recurrent nausea and vomiting were experienced in 3 cases (10%). Gall stone occurred in 2 cases and they were the only late complications.
The mean preoperative BMI was 44.15 kg/m2, which decreased significantly down to 34.45 kg/m2 at 6-month follow up (p = 0.005). The subsequent readings were also significantly lower than the pre-operative value (p < 0.001).
