Ashraf Rizk El-sayed El-Ashry;
Abstract
This study was conducted at Egyptian Liver Hospital (ELH) and other authorized hospitals aiming to assess the safety and outcomes of sleeve gastrectomy as a revisional procedure after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.
The mean age of the included cases was 36.33 years (range, 18 – 57). We included 16 females (80%) as well as 4 males (20%). The mean value of BMI was 39.95 kg/m2 before revision.
The most common encountered comorbidity was diabetes mellitus (11 cases – 55%), followed by hypertension (5 cases – 25%).
The mean operative time was 120 minutes (range, 110 – 150). No intraoperative or post-operative complications were encountered in our study.
The weight decreased significantly from 108.92 kg preoperatively, down to 99.85 kg after 3 months. Subsequent follow up visits revealed that it continued to decrease down to 87.4 and 80.75 kg at 6- and 12- month visits respectively (p
< 0.05).
BMI showed a significant decrease throughout the scheduled follow up visits (p < 0.05). It decreased from 39.95 kg/m2 before operation down to 34.45, 29.85, and 22.3 kg/m2 at 3-, 6-, and 12-month visits respectively.
Regarding the lipid profile, both cholesterol and TG showed a marked decrease, while HDL showed a significant increase (p < 0.05). On the other hand, serum bilirubin and calcium were not affected after the operation.
