Assessment of Omentin-1 as an Adipokine in obese male and females with and without fatty liver disease

Amal Muatafa Ali Mustafa Eid Aboreziq;

Abstract

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome (MetS), is the most common liver disease in developed countries and a major cause of abnormal liver function tests in hepatology practice, The term NAFLD is used to describe a wide spectrum of fatty liver changes ranging from simple steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
Accumulating research suggests that NAFLD is independently associated with insulin resistance. In addition, insulin resistance may predict the severity of liver damage or fatty infiltration in patients with NAFLD
Adipokines are fat-derived hormones and cytokines that play a central role in insulin homeostasis, as well as immunity, and are fundamental to the pathogenesis of the MetS.
